Each child who is under 14 years of age and whose pathological report shows that the child is suffering from cancer and is being treated in a governmental or in a university affiliated hospital can be covered by MAHAK.
If a child diagnosed with cancer is not covered by insurance, the first step is to register and insure the patient and his/her family, and then the medical treatment starts. The supporting services include paying for medical diagnostics, medicines and hospitalization, operations, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, accommodation and transportation (60% of the patients are from provinces other than Tehran).
In addition to the children with cancer from all over Iran, MAHAK has started treatment of Afghan and Iraqi refugee children with cancer (outside camps) through the UNHCR since 1999.
At present this section is in constant contact through MAHAK offices situated in the following nine hospitals and medical centers in Tehran:
- Hazrat Ali-Asghar Hospital
- Mofid Children's Hospital
- Shohada Hospital of Tajrish
- Imam Khomeini Hospital
- Bahrami Hospital
- Cancer Institute
- Shariati Hospital
- I.R. Naval Hospital
- Children's Medical Center
