Second Parenting Conference in MAHAK

Second parenting conference, with the focus on children with cancer, was held on August 28-29 in MAHAK with the presence of MAHAK physicians, psychologists and interested people.
The main subject foci of this two-day conference were investigating the therapeutic challenges which the specialists encounter dealing with cancer-stricken children and their families. The participants were provided with various trainings such as preparing children and their families for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and managing children reactions to illness and death and their social and mental needs during and after treatment. There were also parenting learning stations established for training parents as well as art workshops for children.
Presence of Specialists in Pediatric Cancer and Psychology
On the first day, Dr. Azim Mehrvar, director of MAHAK hospital, explaining the importance of parenting, declared that treatment of children with cancer is merely the result of teamwork among oncologists and psychologists, and considered all the therapeutic issues relevant to mental care.
Then Dr. Farid Gharehdaghi, MAHAK’s pain management specialist, emphasizing the role of multi-specialty management in the community, delivered a lecture on the importance of psychiatric and psychological activities as two chief elements in creating a healthy society. He also recalled psychological implications in great literary works of Persian literature.
Dr. Javad Alaghband-Rad, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, also delivered a speech on ‘Consultation Process in Psychology’ as well as ‘Pre-Bereavement and the Role of Family in Patient Compliance’.
Dr. Rozita Davari, Psychiatrist, also lectured on ‘Troubles of the Parents of Cancer-Stricken Children’ and provided some solutions in this regard.
Dr. Elham Shirazi, Child Psychiatrist, introduced the ‘Psychological Interventions in Parenting and the Siblings of a Child with Cancer’ and ‘Academic and Social Considerations for Pediatric Patients’.
The conference came to an end after participants posed their questions to and received responses from the specialists.
First Course of Parenting Conferences Series in 2012
Earlier in winter 2012, the first parenting conference was held for mental health experts aiming to provide the latest and the most renowned scientific parenting models focusing on three groups of children: hyperactive, depressed and anxious.
MAHAK appreciates the presence of experts and interested attendees in its scientific-professional conferences, and hopes that by conducting such knowledge sharing programs, its stakeholders will be remaining abreast of the latest contributions in the field of pediatrics thus raising the level and quality of organizational and personnel knowledge in order to improve the quality of therapeutic and general medical services required for successful physiological and psychological treatment.
