From the beginning of the 2013 fall semester, MAHAK School will start working continuously in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Ministry of Education with 23 volunteer teachers in MAHAK hospital providing a safe, supportive learning environment for school aged patients.
The purpose of the establishment of this school is to improve the interaction between children during treatment, to maintain their educational pace in accordance with their school-based syllabus, to prevent disinterest in education, and to enhance life and social skills in the child and his family. So far, 980 hours of instruction has been conducted voluntarily in MAHAK.
Educational support for children under treatment is a major concern of MAHAK.
When a child is diagnosed with cancer, all aspects of the life of the entire family unit is adversely effected.
Support Services department, in collaboration with the medical team, provide comprehensive support for children and their families in order to normalize the environment as much as possible under admittedly abnormal circumstances. Within the Support Services department, the social work unit is responsible for providing children with educational provisions within a make shift school structure during their treatment process in hospital.
The activities of the school are divided into two segments: private and public.
In the former, children will be taught by qualified teachers who voluntarily cooperate with MAHAK in various subjects including basic courses such as math, science, English, Arabic and literature. In the latter, the training focuses on group and extracurricular activities such as English language classes for 6 to 12 year-old children adhering to the defined principles and standards of education. In other parts of this section, children will attend art and design classes, as well as drawing and handicrafts according to their interest. Their handmade artifacts will be sold in MAHAK charity bazaars.
In the future, MAHAK School plans to present writing and music workshops for children helping to flourish their talents and their belief in our conviction that ‘Cancer is not the end’ and with effort, any child can achieve excellence.
MAHAK hopes to improve the quality and quantity of activities of this school in order to help children remain children, giving them hope and conviction, preventing them from becoming reclusive, and thus assisting them in maximizing their chances for recovery and returning to normal life afterwards.
