The 8th of June annually marks World Brain Tumor Day, a dedicated occasion to shed light on brain tumors and their treatments. This global initiative not only raises awareness about this illness but also serves as a vital platform for educating the public, advocating for enhancing patient care services and acknowledging the resilience of individuals facing this challenging condition.
Brain tumors are abnormal cell growths within the brain, which can be either cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). Malignant brain tumors are further categorized as primary, originating within the brain, or secondary, spreading from cancer in other parts of the body. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that brain tumors represent a small fraction of all cancers but they are a significant global health concern.
Childhood brain tumors, in particular, rank as the second most common type of solid tumors, which are the leading cause of mortality in pediatric oncology. Brain tumors’ symptoms include headaches, nausea, vision disturbances, and potential long-term cognitive challenges. The symptoms vary depending on the tumor’s location and size.
Treatment for brain tumors is personalized for each patient correlated to variables such as tumor type, size, location, and overall the patient’s health conditions. Treatment options majorly encompass common techniques including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy in line with the novel developed strategies like targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and stem-cell therapy.
Regarding childhood brain tumors, MAHAK charity institute set up “The Biennial International Pediatric Oncology Congress -in Memory of Prof. Vossough” on 15-17 May, 2024 at MAHAK, Tehran, with a focus on a multidisciplinary approach to pediatric brain tumors.
In recent years, the neuro-oncology team at MAHAK Hospital has concentrated on treating brain tumors and is dedicated to suggesting efficient and up-to-date treatment strategies for pediatric brain tumors. Due to MAHAK experts’ 15 years of dedication to the treatment of pediatric brain tumors, they shared their accomplishments with local and global experts during the congress.
Over the past 33 years, MAHAK has advocated for increasing medicine-based research funding, raising awareness, and providing supportive services for those going through this tough condition. On World Brain Tumor Day, MAHAK reaffirms its commitment to endorse children affected by brain tumors with supportive services to their families.
