“Saeed Nasiri, Vice world champion in the field of Weight Lifting”
Saeed Nasiri won second place in the world championship of weight lifting. He is 27 years old and has been a member of the national weight lifting team in Iran for two years. He first began the sport at the age of 15 in 2004. He tells his story with bright eyes and a lot of excitement.: “ Have you ever watched the program called “ Sport is a new beginning “. Well, one day I was watching this program on TV and I saw Morteza Dashti (a famous weight lifter) in that program and I became so interested so on that same day I went to the gym and started participating; after a year I was ready to participate in the entrance exam of the Federation for the disabled. After passing the exam and a lot of hard work and practice for two years, I became the champion of the country and I am so proud to say my coach is the same guy I admired …..Morteza Dashti .”
Saied has been the champion of the country since 2005, and has already won 2 international championships in the Africa-Europe championship held in Libya and the world championship in Malaysia. He won second place and was able to receive the allowance of 2012 London Olympic.
Though receiving all of these high ranks is very impressive, the significance of the story is that Saied was diagnosed with cancer at the age of five. Saied’s father related the story as such: “In 1994, we found out that Saied had cancer and he kept complaining about his pain, his foot would not get better… I mean nothing would ease his pain. We took him to Emam Khomaini hospital and they told us that Saied had cancer and his right leg had to be amputated due to the progress of the cancer.” He continues:” We never gave up and we always had hope. The surgery was in 1994 and he had to be under treatment for two year.”
But now Saied is cancer free. Yes, he has recovered and he is working full force as a weight lifting champion. Now, we are honored that he has decided to share his story with us as a sign of gratitude and appreciation.
We wish you happiness and success Saied!
