Hourieh Zoghi, a senior psychologist and the head of psychological domain at MAHAK charity institute, talked about MAHAK playrooms for children. She stated that individual or group-based play therapy sessions take place in these playrooms.
Ms. Zoghi discussed the influence of play therapy in helping children dealing with cancer and said: play therapy is tailored to meet the mental and behavioral needs of children encountering anxiety linked to illness, regardless of whether they have clinical disorders or not.
She continued: play therapy is employed to help children accept their illness, realize their condition, and go through the path of restoring their health with less difficulty. Considering that the extended treatment phases often lead to decreasing morale in children, play therapy aids to create a calmer therapeutic environment as well as activating positive behaviors in these children.
Moreover, Ms. Zoghi mentioned the book trolley is the hospital medicine trolley, but this time, there are books inside it instead of needles and syringe. The books within the book trolley are carefully selected by the psychological experts, and MAHAK volunteers distribute the books among children. Since the corona virus pandemic, MAHAK has also provided the digital formats of the books for children and their family.
According to Hourieh Zoghi, MAHAK children can either pick up their favorite book from the trolley, or MAHAK psychologists choose the right book for them based on their treatment stages.
She concluded her words by highlighting the purpose of providing book trolleys and play therapy services, which is to moderate the treatment process for children suffering from cancer at MAHAK. She affirmed that the positive effects of these interventions can be well observed during children’s curing at MAHAK hospital.
