April 7th marks the United Nations’ World Health Day, celebrated annually with a specific theme and campaign focused on enhancing global health initiatives. The theme for World Health Day 2025 is “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.” This slogan emphasizes the importance of ensuring the well-being and survival of women and newborns, urging governments and health organizations to strengthen efforts to eliminate preventable maternal and infant deaths.
The health of mothers and their infants is fundamental to the strength of families and communities, paving the way for brighter futures for all.
Controversially, current statistics reveal a staggering reality: approximately 300,000 women die each year from pregnancy-related causes, and over 2 million infants do not survive beyond their first month, with an additional 2 million stillborn. This amounts to roughly one preventable death every seven seconds.
Every woman, newborn, and family deserves access to quality healthcare that addresses not only direct obstetric complications but also mental health issues, noncommunicable diseases, and family planning. Dr. Pascale Allotey, Director of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research at WHO, emphasizes, “Women require access to a variety of services from healthcare providers who listen to their concerns and fulfill their needs—not just to survive childbirth but to enjoy good health and a quality life throughout their lives, even beyond motherhood.”
Understanding the vital role of mothers and newborns in society, MAHAK Charity Institute was founded 34 years ago by a mother facing challenges regarding her child’s health. MAHAK mission focuses on delivering the highest quality care for children with cancer and their families.
In line with this purpose, MAHAK Supportive Services Department provides social workers and psychologists, offering essential support to families during treatment and long after recovery.
This April 7th presents a significant opportunity to highlight the ongoing support required for women and their newborns, who are indeed the treasures of our world.
