On the occasion of World Deaf Week, Dr. Massoud Ghassemi, the volunteer otolaryngologist and audiologist at the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic at MAHAK, which has been equipped with his support in memory of his late father, introduced this specialized clinic and said:
“Based on WHO statistics 2015, more than 360 million people are suffering from hearing loss and deafness that 32 million of them are children. Cancer and hearing loss are more closely related than one might think.
Cancer can affect hearing in three different ways: 1) cancer of the ear, 2) different types of cancer which are not related to ear directly but will involve it and 3) cancer treatments causing hearing loss. The cancers of the ear are so rare, less prevalence and under control by surgery and medicine. On the other hand, different types of head and neck cancers also indirectly cause hearing loss and deafness.
It is notable that using chemotherapy drugs among children with cancer will weaken the auditory vestibular nerve and leads to hearing loss. So, it is fully mandatory to observe the children with cancer on an ongoing basis to discontinue or change the drugs under the supervision of the specialists in case of any hearing problems.
Since three years ago, this clinic has started offering diagnosis and treatment services except surgeries to cancer-stricken children along with consultation to our oncologists.
MAHAK hospital concentrates on pediatric cancer specifically and in line with centralizing all the treatment and support services at MAHAK hospital, other clinics, such as ENT, are set up to provide children with cancer with supplementary services, thus prevent and control the side effects of cancer.”
During the past quarter-century, MAHAK has been always responsible to the children with cancer and their families and tried to provide them with the best possible treatment and support services based on the global standards of supporting cancer-stricken children and put its efforts to achieve and improve these standards in different aspects of its activity.
