KSC & Hewa Hospital’s Expedition in MAHAK

In line with its mission to disseminate gained knowledge and experience in specialized fields to specialists and similar organizations, MAHAK organized multiple knowledge sharing meetings with 10 members of Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) & Hewa Hospital on September 7-10, 2013, identifying best practices, receiving feedbacks from visiting professionals, and conducting general scientific consultation in order to contribute to the improvement of the quality of therapeutic and general medical services in support of children suffering from cancer.

KSC is a Kurdish, non-governmental, children’s organization founded in 1991 where they work for the benefit of all children, and run projects nationwide to improve, develop, and support the lives of children; and Hewa Hospital is a Kurdish non-governmental, not-for-profit medical organization supported by private philanthropists.

During these meetings, organized on the basis of developing joint cooperation activities in support of children with cancer between the aforementioned institutions and MAHAK, they visited each ward of MAHAK hospital, pain management and other auxiliary clinics, research sub-department, BMT, ICU, IT and laboratory facilities.  They also visited different parts of MAHAK charity such as social services and psychology department, play rooms, volunteers department and council, fundraising department, rehabilitation centre and public and international relations department.  Nurses also visited the in-patient wards of MAHAK hospital in the company of the nursing Matron during their stay.

The noticeable point which they found impressive during their visit was close correlation between all services provided under one roof in MAHAK supported by various international studies to increase chance of recovery.  In addition to this, close cooperation between the medical team and support services specialists including social workers and psychologists in MAHAK was also underlined as one of the key points resulting in more effective treatment process and lower mortality rate in MAHAK.

Among MAHAK’s long-term goals are remaining abreast of the latest contributions in the field and exchanging knowledge and experience with professionals and experts.  We extend this commitment in the form of joint cooperation activities with other institutions and in different fields related to providing comprehensive support to children with cancer and their families at the national and international level in order to ensure a better future for all children wherever they may be in this small planet of ours.
