Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder that impairs the body’s ability to produce sufficient hemoglobin, the vital component responsible for transporting oxygen through the bloodstream. This deficiency results in anemia, fatigue, and a host of other health issues, affecting millions worldwide and demanding lifelong treatment and support. Beyond the medical implications, it significantly influences the physical, emotional, and social well-being of individuals. With approximately 100 million carriers and over 300,000 newborns diagnosed annually with severe forms, Thalassemia’s impact is profound and far-reaching.
Every year on May 8th, the world comes together to shine a spotlight on this condition over Thalassemia Day. Initiated in 2009 by the Thalassemia International Federation, this day aims to foster global collaboration to improve disease detection, expand access to effective treatment, and enhance the quality of life for those living with this lifelong condition.
The theme for this year’s observance, “Together for Thalassemia: Uniting Communities, Prioritizing Patients,” underscores the importance of collective effort and compassion. It calls for a shift towards a more patient-centered approach—one that recognizes the unique experiences, needs, and rights of each individual. The theme also highlights pressing challenges, including limited access to standardized treatments and diagnostic services, a lack of understanding of patient perspectives, and minimal patient involvement in shaping healthcare policies and services.
During past 34 years, MAHAK Charity Institute has provided support for 131 children affected by both cancer and thalassemia. Among these, 38 have successfully recovered and are now striving to lead normal lives.
Thalassemia Day serves as an important opportunity for MAHAK to join the world in solidarity, spreading hope, inspiring positive changes, and working toward a more inclusive and healthier future for everyone impacted by this lifelong condition.
At MAHAK, we believe that “Together in unity, we thrive!”
